Definition

Develops, coordinates, implements, evaluates, and promotes art exhibitions designed for a broad range of visitors to the Museum with the aim of increasing campus, art community, and general public engagement with the Museum and its mission.

Typical Duties

Conceptualizes, develops, and implements new and original art exhibitions for the Museum, including from the permanent collection and from art objects on loan from other institutions.

Develops didactic materials for exhibitions, including wall text, labels, gallery guides, and other content.

Collaborates with Museum staff on the development of new art-related educational programs, including assistance with research and grant writing.

Assists with the planning and implementation of guest-curated exhibitions and related projects.

Develops and reviews published content related to exhibitions for accuracy and effective promotion of the Museum.

Coordinates and oversees the work of museum staff in relation to exhibitions.

Participates in planning meetings regarding the permanent collection, exhibition planning, museum strategic planning, fundraising, and other exhibition-related matters.

Conducts research and maintains data on audience engagement, such as visitor satisfaction evaluations, to determine the effectiveness in engaging first-time and return visitors.

Designs exhibitions and associated programs to adequately account for diversity, equity, inclusion and accessibility.

Develops and oversees exhibition and program budgets, including documentation and preparation of reports.

Establishes and maintains relationships with a diverse range of students, faculty, donors, collectors, gallerists, artists, museum professionals, and scholars.

Researches current artists and trends in art for the purpose of new exhibitions and related programming.

Assists with planning meetings with internal, campus, and external partners to develop new exhibition and educational content for the Museum.

Assists with planning and implementation of special events, including budgeting, securing of materials, and day-of-event logistics.

Performs related duties as assigned.

Distinguishing Characteristics

A Curator of Exhibitions, Vincent Price Art Museum develops, coordinates, implements, evaluates, and promotes art exhibitions designed for a broad range of visitors to the Museum with the aim of increasing campus, art community, and general public engagement with the Museum and its mission.

A Curator of Educational Programs, Vincent Price Art Museum plans, develops, implements, and evaluates a wide range of education and learning experiences designed to promote understanding of and accessibility to art and enhance engagement with the Museum and its programs among a wide range of college, art world, and community audiences.

An Art Gallery and Museum Director has full responsibility for the planning, operation, fundraising, and direction of a college art gallery and museum.

Supervision

General supervision is received from an Art Gallery Director. Provides work direction and functional supervision to Art Gallery Preparators and other Museum support staff.

Class Qualifications

Knowledge of:

Principles and techniques of exhibit curation for a museum or gallery

Principles and techniques of art installation and de-installation for exhibits

Principles of art education and art history

Current trends in art

Accreditation and licensing requirements for art objects

Procedures and requirements associated with loans and traveling exhibitions

Security practices necessary to protect art collections and objects in storage or on exhibit

Basic techniques of acquisition, classification, storing, transportation and preservation of art objects

Basic techniques of art cataloguing, collections records, and systems for registering and locating art items

Basic principles of grant writing and fundraising

Insurance requirements for galleries, museums, and special exhibits

Basic principles and practices of budget preparation and maintenance

Principles of diversity, equity, inclusion, and accessibility as applicable to a museum or art gallery

Principles of supervision and training

Organization and management of records

Capabilities of computer systems, software, and hardware related to art museums and galleries

Travel to off-site meetings and events

Ability to:

Effectively conceptualize, develop, and curate art exhibits

Coordinate the installation and de-installation of art pieces

Effectively plan and execute the logistical aspects of museum events and programs

Assist with development and assessment of educational and community programming

Effectively maintain conservation requirements for various art pieces in exhibition or in storage

Apply principles and techniques pertinent to the acquisition, classification, storing, transportation, preservation, and display of art objects

Anticipate conditions, plan ahead, establish priorities, and meet schedules

Conduct surveys and effectively assess respondent data

Maintain cooperative relationships with a diverse pool of administrators, faculty, staff, students, and the community

Prepare effective reports, correspondence, and presentations

Train and oversee the work of others

Communicate clearly both orally and in writing

Oversee and maintain a budget

Learn specialized computer applications

Travel to off-site meetings and events

Entrance Qualifications

A bachelor's degree from a recognized college or university with a major in art education, art history, studio art, museum studies, or a related field AND two years of full-time, paid, professional-level experience in developing or implementing exhibitions in an art museum or gallery. An advanced degree in one of the aforementioned majors is desirable. Experience with diverse audiences is desirable.

Special:

A valid Class 'C' California driver's license is required.

Travel throughout the District is required.
