Job Description

The BIO IT division is looking for an IT Project Manager III to join their team. This position manages all aspects of cost, schedule, and performance of technical projects in support of business objectives as well as projects including highly complex or specialist projects and/or programs. This position will also serve as a single point of contact for senior management within those projects; managing all issues, risks, changes and budgets for these projects and takes the lead role in implementing project methodology processes providing coaching and direction to other project managers and c ollaborates with senior level management, multiple stakeholders, and county leadership.

Location and hours:

This position is remote. Remote workers may be required to come on-site 0 to 12 days a year for work meetings, trainings, or for any other reasons that their supervisor may deem necessary (may include additional days for onboarding and new employee training). Supervisors will provide as much advance notice as practicable.  Work hours will be Monday through Friday, 8 a.m. - 4:30 p.m.,  Based on business needs of this position, hires must live in or relocate to Minnesota.

This position is eligible to receive an additional cash merit of up to $2,888.89 that can be earned annually based on performance.

In this position, you will:

  • Manage and execute projects; serve as a single point of contact for projects.
  • Develop detailed work plans, schedules, project estimates, resource plans, and status reports.
  • Create and maintain project documentation such as charter, change forms, status reports, meeting minutes, presentations, and other communication items.
  • Ensure project compliance with internal or relevant external policies and procedures.
  • Review project deliverables; ensure adherence to quality standards.
  • Manage integration of vendor tasks; track and review vendor deliverables.
  • Coordinate and guide project team and direct problem analysis and resolution.
  • Provide efficient management of software upgrades and software lifecycle management among the 25 departments supported by BIO IT.


Need to have:
  • One of the following:
    • Nine years or more of IT experience. 
    • Associate's degree in one of the below fields or an approved certification in an IT program or Project Management Professional (PMP) certification and seven years or more of experience managing technology projects. 
    • Approved Hennepin County IT internship and seven years or more of IT experience.
    • Completion of five college/vocational technology courses and seven years or more of IT experience.
    • Bachelor's degree or higher in business administration, management information systems (MIS), or an approved related field and five years or more of experience managing technology projects. 
Nice to have:
  • Certification by the Project Management Institute as a Project Management Professional.
  • Experience:
    • Managing IT projects including development, infrastructure, and system implementations and/or upgrades.
    • Creating and managing a project portfolio.
    • Working in other IT roles besides project management.
  • Knowledge of:
    • Microsoft Project and/or other advanced project management software.
    • Agile (Scrum or Kanban) methodologies.
    • Information Technology Infrastructure Library (ITIL).
    • Software development lifecycle (SDLC) and DevOps principles.
    • IT automation and monitoring tools at Hennepin County.
  • Ability to:
    • Work with teams and contributors to make valuable progress on identified or assigned projects.
    • Build positive, working relationships with co-workers, teams, and stakeholders.
    • Maintain effective vendor management and contract management skills.
    • Manage changes.
